Prerna Mewawalla, MD, is a nationally recognized, board-certified hematologist-oncologist specializing in multiple myeloma, amyloidosis and other plasma cell disorders. At Allegheny Health Network (AHN), she serves as director of the Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy program and apheresis medical director.

Dr. Mewawalla provides comprehensive, individualized care throughout the myeloma journey — from newly diagnosed and high-risk disease to relapsed or treatment-resistant myeloma. Her expertise includes autologous stem cell transplantation, CAR T-cell therapy, bispecific antibody therapy and clinical trials. As principal investigator on several national myeloma trials, she helps expand patients’ access to promising new treatments.

Dr. Mewawalla has led major advances in cancer care at AHN, including expanding bispecific antibody treatment into community settings so patients can receive complex therapies closer to home, leading the transplant program through FACT accreditation, and helping establish AHN as a recognized amyloidosis center of excellence.

Dr. Mewawalla is a nationally and internationally invited speaker and widely published clinical investigator whose work has appeared in leading peer-reviewed journals. Her honors include recognition as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor and Exceptional Woman in Medicine in 2026, induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, the USMIRC Eagle Award for advancing research in plasma cell disorders, and the Pennsylvania Medical Society Healthcare Hero Award.

Prerna Mewawalla, MD, is an associate professor of medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine. Her teaching focuses on multiple myeloma, amyloidosis, stem cell transplantation, CAR T-cell therapy, bispecific antibodies and cellular therapy.

Dr. Mewawalla is actively involved in teaching medical students, internal medicine residents and hematology-oncology fellows on the bone marrow transplant inpatient service and in the outpatient clinic. She provides bedside and clinic-based education in evaluating patients, developing treatment plans, managing complications, and delivering complex cellular and immune-based therapies.

Her educational work also includes continuing medical education, invited lectures and national multimedia education for physicians. She serves as course director for the Highlights of ASH CME Conference and is an invited speaker at national and international conferences on multiple myeloma, stem cell transplantation, CAR T-cell therapy, and bispecific antibodies. She regularly translates rapidly evolving evidence into practical guidance on treatment selection, therapeutic sequencing, toxicity management, outpatient treatment and expanding access to advanced therapies.

As director of the Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy program at Allegheny Health Network, Dr. Mewawalla integrates education with multidisciplinary care, clinical research, quality improvement and program development. Her commitment to faculty development, sponsorship, mentorship and allyship was recognized with Drexel University College of Medicine’s 2026 Faculty Professional Development, Sponsorship and Allyship Award.

Research Overview

Clinical and real-world research in multiple myeloma, amyloidosis, and other plasma cell disorders, with emphasis on CAR-T cell therapy, bispecific antibodies, stem cell transplantation, treatment sequencing, high-risk disease and expanding access to advanced therapies.

Research

Dr. Mewawalla’s research focuses on improving outcomes for patients with multiple myeloma and other plasma cell disorders through clinical trials, real-world evidence and innovative models of care delivery. Her principal areas of investigation include CAR T-cell therapy, bispecific antibodies, treatment sequencing, high-risk myeloma, stem cell transplantation, amyloidosis, and the safe delivery of advanced therapies in outpatient and community settings.

Dr. Mewawalla serves as principal investigator on multiple national clinical trials evaluating novel treatments across the myeloma disease continuum, including newly diagnosed, high-risk smoldering, and relapsed or treatment-resistant multiple myeloma.

Her real-world research examines the effectiveness, safety and optimal sequencing of CAR T-cell therapies and bispecific antibodies, including outcomes following prior BCMA-directed treatment. Additional areas of investigation include high-risk cytogenetics, transplant outcomes, renal impairment in myeloma, infection prevention and barriers to clinical-trial access.

Her research is complemented by programmatic work to expand bispecific antibody treatment into community settings, streamline CAR T-cell care, reduce stem cell mobilization failures, and improve stem cell collection efficiency. Her research leadership was recognized with the 2025 USMIRC Eagle Award for advancing research in plasma cell disorders.
