Global Health Education Student Experiences Whitney Pettijohn

A scene from Whitney Pettijohn's global health experience in Bournemouth, United Kingdom

This summer, I spent a week shadowing at the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) clinic in Bournemouth, one of the largest providers of abortion care in the United Kingdom. During my time there, I observed the full spectrum of clinic operations, from patient intake to counseling sessions, medical procedures and follow-up care. I was struck by the seamless collaboration between physicians, nurse practitioners and administrative staff, all working together to provide compassionate, patient-centered care in what can often be an emotionally charged and vulnerable setting.

Through shadowing consultations and observing clinical decision-making, I gained a deeper appreciation for the complexity of reproductive health care, where medical expertise must be balanced with empathy, clear communication and respect for patient autonomy. Witnessing how providers carefully guided patients through their options highlighted the critical importance of access, dignity and trust in reproductive medicine.

This experience not only reinforced my commitment to pursuing a career focused in women’s health, but also expanded my perspective on the intersection of reproductive rights, public health policy and clinical care delivery. It was a formative reminder that, beyond technical skill, the heart of medicine lies in listening to patients and meeting them where they are with both compassion and clarity.
