Global Health Education Student Experiences Victoria Kaestner

My rotation at Medical Electives Peru in Trujillo, Peru, was an integral part of my fourth-year experience. I worked in both hospital and community health settings alongside Peruvian physicians, gaining hands-on experience in diagnostic reasoning and treatment planning, all in Spanish. Once a week, we participated in free health fairs, providing care to underserved communities. During the afternoons, we took classes in grammar and medical Spanish.

One of the most rewarding parts of the rotation was leading an initiative to set up a triage table at the health fairs, which helped streamline patient flow and improve care. On weekends, I explored rich cultural heritage sites with friends, such as Huacas del Sol y la Luna, Chan Chan, Huanchaco Beach, and even took a ten-hour bus ride to relax on the beaches of Máncora. Forming a wonderful relationship with my host family made the experience even more special.
