During my time in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, I volunteered and shadowed physicians at Republican Oncology Center – which is the main institution for delivering oncological care in the country. I worked there for about five weeks (around 200 hours). I got to see a diverse population of patients with varying presentations. Unfortunately, patients usually presented late in their ailment. There are no medical/radiation oncologists, only surgical oncologists. Thus, the main mode of treatment is radical surgery followed by radiation/chemotherapy. Overall, my experience in Uzbekistan was enlightening and helped me to expand my knowledge base on oncology beyond the United States. I hope these experiences will build a foundation in the future for me to become a competent and open-minded physician.
