"I was interested in an immersive program that would allow me to practice Spanish while volunteering.
"Mayan Medical Aid was that and more! The program focused on cultural competency and improving language fluency while delivering medical care to the Mayan population living around Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. I spent just over four weeks at the lake, and by the end of my trip, I was able to take a detailed patient history in Spanish and list medications to treat a range of conditions. Moreover, I learned much about Mayan heritage. I also made wonderful friends from other medical schools. We explored Guatemala together on the weekends including the Mayan ruins. The trip was very fulfilling and my only regret is that I did not spend more time there."
