"This summer I traveled with a language learning program to Beijing, China. While my main goal in participating in the program was to improve my Mandarin proficiency, my 8-week experience provided multiple opportunities to enjoy many aspects of Chinese culture and history and even see glimpses of Chinese medical care.

"Some of my experiences in China included visiting a traditional Chinese medical doctor to receive advice on how to improve my health and wellness, traveling to a nursing home to learn about the growing burden of China's aging population, and learning multiple Chinese medical terms.

"My summer demonstrates that it is possible to mesh two very different paths that you value into one cohesive whole. I was able to take my love for studying Chinese language, culture and history and let it shape my perspective on how I may practice medicine in the future. Overall, my summer in China was one of the most fulfilling experiences I have ever had the privilege to participate in and an opportunity I will forever cherish.
