Caitlin Cross

I volunteered with a locally run program in Livingstone, Zambia, that has international headquarters overseeing programs in a number of countries.
Once I applied and was accepted, the program placed me at a local clinic, which I traveled to every day to volunteer. I was located at Libuyu Clinic in Libuyu. In the clinic, I was able to volunteer in any ward that interested me. During my time there I volunteered in:
- Maternity ward
- “Under 5” for vaccinations and growth checkups
- HIV testing and counseling
- HIV public awareness
- Laboratory
- Phlebotomy
- General intake
- Family planning, including circumcision and education
More areas to volunteer exist as well!
I also volunteered my free time from the clinic in a local orphanage that the local team can get you in contact with and at a construction site where the local team is helping to build a school for children in a nearby village.
I lived in a shared home with other volunteers and the local team, and paid a flat price before starting that covers all housing and meals. The local team provides an introduction to the city, suggests and plans weekend or afternoon excursions, and can be reached 24/7.
The program focuses on volunteering in an area with need that is also a tourist destination, so there are endless activities to take part in from safaris and cultural tours, to seeing one of the natural wonders of the world: Victoria Falls!
