Global Health Education Student Experiences Aneri Amin

Drexel MD student Aneri Amin with colleagues during a global health experience in East Java, Indonesia

During my time in Indonesia, I explored WASH and nutrition issues and community-driven initiatives in the urban setting of Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia. I worked with Wahana Visi (World Vision) Indonesia to learn about the organization's initiatives to prevent malnutrition and stunting in urban communities. I worked alongside Indonesia's community-based health care program, called Posyandu, where I explored the environmental and individual challenges faced by community health workers (cadres) in poor urban sub-districts, such as in Surabaya.

In my free time, alongside my Dornsife Global Development Scholar peers, I had the opportunity to explore the country, its beautiful landscapes and vibrant culture, from watching the sunrise over Mount Bromo in East Java to exploring the beautiful temples in Central Java. I also had the privilege of immersing myself in the local community, where the locals welcomed me with open arms and made me feel at home. I thoroughly enjoyed my summer, and I hope to return as soon as I get the opportunity!
