Zambia, Dornsife Global Health Scholar with World Vision
Summer 2016
"As a Dornsife Scholar, I was able to continue working in global health, which was my primary motivator to pursue a career in medicine. In Monze, Zambia, I was interested in understanding the impact of water, sanitation and health initiatives implemented by World Vision on women with children under the age of five. In particular, I wanted to learn about behavior change regarding water and sanitation practices after the cholera outbreak that had occurred a couple of months ago. In class we had learned about the cholera bacterium through a biological lens, but this was an opportunity to understand the people’s perception of it and the preventative measures taken post-outbreak. Working in Monze was challenging yet very rewarding, and it reinforced my desire to become a physician who works with underserved populations both domestically and abroad."
