Ghana, Africa - CDC Hubert Fellowship
M4 Senior Elective 2018

"My project was assisting with CDC Ghana's SIMS (Surveillance Improvement Monitoring System) project, which is an effort to conduct quality assurance assessments of HIV testing and counseling centers throughout Ghana.

"Specifically, I focused on assessing the testing and counseling activities of designated PEPFAR-supported HIV centers throughout the western region of Ghana. For this project, we conducted site visits and used the SIMS tool to determine whether the sites are meeting PEPFAR standards. Then we made plans with the sites and the other public health partners for site remediation as necessary. In addition to the fieldwork portion of this project, I participated in CDC activities at the US Embassy in Accra, including viral load monitoring scale-up assessments and emergency preparedness activities. I also traveled to a large hospital in Kumasi to help with the monitoring of an ongoing sepsis project taking place there."
