A panel discussion exploring the intersectional experience of black women physicians and their journeys to leadership. We will have three distinguished panelists: Crystal A. Gadegbeku, MD – Chair, Department of Nephrology, Glickman Urological & Kidney Institute, Cleveland Clinic; Marisa Rogers, MD, MPH – Executive Medical Director, Atlantic Division - Oak Street Health; and Nikkisha P. McCrea, MD – Director of Medical Services, Horsham Clinic. We will be raffling off a $15 Amazon Gift Card to students who attend this event! Hosted by Black Women in Medicine.

As part of DUCOM's diversity week celebrations, ODEI is excited to host a painting event where students can come together to create artwork that is unique to their nationality, culture or identity. Through this fun and de-stressing activity, we hope to highlight the colorful student body at DUCOM and advocate for the importance of diversity. Students will be able to enjoy delicious food and music - AND have their artwork displayed at Around The World.

Come out to meet all of DUCOM's multicultural and diverse identity student groups where you can learn about different cultures and identities through games, activities and crafts, and receive snack/gift tokens from each group. Get enough table stamps signed on your entrance passport and you will receive a free, delicious international dinner featuring food samples from a diverse array of different countries. Take pictures at our photobooth, dance to the music, and have a great time with us!

Skin of Color Presentation by Dr. Alaina James

Dr. Alaina James is a board-certified dermatologist who completed her dermatology residency at the University of Pennsylvania with a concentration in skin of color, and currently serves as an assistant professor in the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Dermatology. She is also the founder of Mobile Derm, a community outreach initiative that works to ensure access to dermatology services to under-served local and rural communities. Dr. James has dedicated her career to addressing and alleviating the disparities that exist in skin health and we are very proud to have her speak to our student body. We will be raffling off 10 $10 Amazon Gift Cards and 6 $25 Amazon Gift Cards to students who attend this event! Hosted by Dermatology Interest Group.

Seizure Recognition & First Aid Course

This training will present an overview of seizure types, the administration of proper seizure first aid, the latest medical treatments and devices, unique challenges faced by those diagnosed with epilepsy, and information about seizure action and hospital plans. A certificate of completion and epilepsy resources will be emailed to all attendees after the training. Diversity Week 2021 marked the first fully-virtual iteration of the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion’s annual event promoting diversity in medical education and in the health care field. MD Program students from different student organizations came together to ensure that the week’s events – from trivia to panel discussions – provided education on diversity and championed equity and inclusion, even without the benefits of in-person participation and conversation. Story & Poetry Slam - Anyone who wishes, can deliver a story or poem based on the topic: Life as a medical student. Each entrant will be given five minutes to present their story/poem. Two winners (determined by applause and three judges) will advance on to the city-wide medical school 3rd Annual StorySlam at the Philadelphia College of Physicians on Monday, May 11, 2020. "Refugee Health Care and Issues" - Engage with fabulous panelists to learn more about the barriers to health care faced by people who identify as a refugee, an asylum-seeker, or under-insured! We will be inviting speakers from various organizations who are well-equipped with knowledge and resources to help refugee health in Philadelphia!

HOP Service Project

In collaboration with Diversity Week, HOP hopes to bring the DUCOM community together in service by preparing some packages for the homeless this holiday season. These packages will include PB&J sandwiches, holiday notes, and a mixture of hand sanitizers, lip balm, and generous sock and glove donations from the community. Join us in the assembly and all the fun in SAC B. Note: the sock and glove drive is ongoing through Monday, December 3.

First Generation Panel

The "First Generation Panel" will by led by first generation doctors and med students. They will answer students' questions and will discuss their experiences as first generation students and doctors. 18% of the 2021 class and 15% of the 2022 class are the first in their families to go to college.

Around the World
- 6 – 8 p.m.: Upper and Lower SAC
The "Around The World Event" will allow students to experience different cultures through dance, food, and various fun educational experiences. Each student is given a passport and can participate in events hosted by one of many diverse clubs to collect passport stamps so that they can enjoy cultural food. Events range from dance events such as Bachata (LMSA), Dandyia (SAMSA), and Tinkling (FAMSA) dance lessons to origami folding of 1000 cranes (APAMSA), walking in heels in obstacle course (AMWA), field nutrition and education (Military Medicine), refugee population guess + map (global conflict and medicine), guess where the country is on the map (LMSA), and language learning (SNMA).

Culture and Medicine Panel

This panel will be talking to medical students about how culture has affected their medical career paths and how they practice medicine. It will involve physician representatives from the South Asian Medical Student Association (SAMSA), the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) and the Filipino American Medical Student Association (FAMSA).

DUCOM Classical's Winter Recital
