Katherine presented a Discovery Day poster, "A Barrier Analysis Evaluating the Obstacles and Perceptions Regarding Handwashing at Critical Times in Chongwe, Zambia" based on her global health experience.

This summer I worked alongside the World Vision Zambia WASH team as a Dornsife Global Development Scholar in Chongwe, Zambia. The major project I conducted was a barrier analysis regarding handwashing with soap at three or more critical times. In the course of this study, my co-fellow and I wrote a barrier analysis questionnaire specifically for the area of Lwimba, Zambia, trained local hygiene promoters to conduct interviews and evaluate household facilities, and supervised data collection from over 90 households. After gathering these interviews, we organized and facilitated a focus group with 21 members of the community to pinpoint a specific community activity based on the results. In evaluating the perceptions, ideas and votes of the community, we developed a behavior change framework that will be used to guide WASH programming. Learning about practical community engagement and building relationships with community members was a highlight of the experience.
