Global Health Education Pre-departure Coursework

Upon approval and pre-departure, students are required to complete didactic coursework on cultural and ethical competency and consider a plan of future study.

Goals and Objectives

Please develop a set of goals and objectives for your international elective and your continued scholarly activity based on this elective.

Here are a few suggested learning objectives to start:

  • Compare and contrast individual health-seeking behavior in the community you'll visit with individual health-seeking behavior in your home community.
  • Compare and contrast the health care setting of the elective with your home health care setting.
  • Articulate the spectrum of challenges — from political, to sociological, to biomedical — that affect provision of health care at your visiting site.

Cultural Competency and Ethical Training

Students rotating in global settings are learners, not health care providers. One obligation, among others, is an ethical obligation not to practice outside one's scope of training. Please review and learn the material in these courses, articles and video. You do not need to pay for the certificates.
