It's NOT Okay to Ask For Help

Summer 2025

The students wrote this about their project, which is meant to convey how student use of AI affects the environment:

"Through this art piece, we want to convey to our intended audience of college students the detrimental impact that AI has towards our environment. Advanced AI models (such as ChatGPT 4) require a vast amount of electricity and water to operate, putting strains on local energy grids and freshwater reservoirs. AI hardware centers are also responsible for significant Carbon Dioxide emissions, which puts a greater strain on global initiatives to keep the carbon levels in our atmosphere to a minimum. We must make our own individual contributions to halt the progression of climate change—even if it is in lieu of the easier alternative—because if we don't, the environmental degradation and devastation predicted by climate scientists will come to pass. In our digitally illustrated art piece, our composition depicts a person within a ChatGPT interface. The phone beams into a backdrop of industrial smokestacks, in order to connect daily reliance on artificial intelligence to its impact on the environment. We also used a contrasting palette of white, black, and red, along with selective colored text to highlight the irony of the “help” that tools like ChatGPT provide."
