Battle of the Experts
September 24-26, 2021
Due to travel concerns surrounding Covid-19, the 2021 Battle of the Experts will take place as an online competition.
The Battle of the Experts is a unique mock trial competition that showcases the critical role of expert witnesses in litigation. Whether advocates are trying civil or criminal cases, they will often examine or cross-examine professionals who have expertise in a wide range of fields, from fingerprints and DNA to forensic accounting, disaster investigation, memory and psychology, medicine and drug interactions and more.
This unique competition relies on presiding judges with a distinctive form of expertise: they are all seasoned mock trial coaches, who know exactly what goes into preparing law students to shine in the courtroom. These expert mock trial coaches are supremely well qualified to preside over rounds and ensure a fair competition. A jury of three leading trial lawyers serve as the scoring judges.
The competition is limited to 16 of the strongest trial advocacy law schools in the country, ensuring a challenging and rewarding experience for competitors.
We will be hosting the 2021 Battle of the Experts trial competition on September 24, 2021 through September 26, 2021 (coaches meeting to occur on September 23, 2021). The tournament will be via Zoom. This year, unlike last, we have decided to add a fourth preliminary round. The rounds will be judged by some of the top trial attorneys and litigators in the Philadelphia area. Four teams of our field of 16 will advance to the playoffs. One will be crowned the fourth Battle of the Experts champion. (And, of course, we will give several Outstanding Advocate awards, one Best Advocate award, and, most importantly, the coveted Best Presiding Judge award.)
This year’s case will feature one expert witness per side. Schools must field teams of four. A student may play an advocate/witness on both sides of the case. All advocates will be required to perform either a direct examination or cross examination of an expert witness per round. Our rounds will also be presided over by the experts—the coaches of the participating teams. This year’s case will be criminal. Given the nature of this year’s case topic, we won’t be providing live, medical witnesses. Instead, students will play your experts. We think you’ll like the case. Click here for a case teaser.
