Tablet & Mobile Encryption

Overview of Service

Drexel has established security standards for mobile devices that synchronize information with University services to ensure safe storage and handling.

Drexel and the College of Medicine operate Exchange email servers that require extra settings for mobile device security. Most devices will prompt you to accept new settings (see below). If you do not accept the changes, your device will stop synchronizing with the server.

Description & Features

  • Increased security for sensitive information sent or accessed through Exchange on a mobile device
  • Automatic download of security settings upon connection to the Exchange server
  • A 6-digit or longer Personal Identification Number (PIN)
  • Device erasure after 15 (Drexel) or 12 (College of Medicine) consecutive mis-entered PINs
  • Warnings and entry delays after mis-entered PINs (some devices only)

Getting Started

Settings are automatically applied when mobile devices connect to the Drexel Exchange servers.

These security settings require a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to turn on the display if the device hasn't be used for more than a few minutes. At Drexel, that PIN is at minimum a 6-digit number; simple patterns such as 111111 or 123456 are disallowed. The timeout is user-selectable, up to 15 minutes.

Requesting Help

If you have questions about the smartphone and tablet security settings, please contact the IT Help Desk by email at helpdesk@drexel.edu or call 215.895.2020.

Additional Information

If a device does not comply with these security measures, it must be upgraded or replaced to access email from Drexel Exchange servers.
