Copy Course Content

Instructors can elect to import content from a course they previously taught into their upcoming Canvas course. Before importing a copy, consult your college/department support for guidance as some units have alternative procedures in place.

It is strongly recommended to only copy into a destination course once. When performing multiple imports, previously imported content from the same course will be replaced.

Importing Course Content in Canvas

1. Navigate to the upcoming Canvas course into which you will be importing the content.

2. On the Home page, click "Import Existing Content" in the right-hand menu. (Alternatively, click "Settings" in the left-hand navigation menu, then click "Import Course Content" in the right-hand menu.)

3. Under "Select Content Type," use the drop-down menu to select "Copy Canvas Course."

4. Use the "Search for a course" search bar to find and select the source course from which you will be pulling content. For best results, we recommend searching using the course's unique course ID number and term code (i.e. 12345.202515).

5. Under the "Content" section, ensure "All content" is selected to import all content from the source course. It is much easier to delete items you do not need from the new course than it is to perform another copy if you missed something.

6. Optionally, check the "Adjust events and due dates" box under the Options section. This will allow you to enter the beginning and ending dates of the source and destination courses so that activity dates can be shifted accordingly. You can also opt to remove dates entirely and reset them manually. Regardless, it's a good idea to review all course availability and due dates for accuracy after importing course content.

7. When ready, click "+ Add to Import Queue" to begin the import process. The process will be added to the import queue at the bottom of the page. When the process status is marked Completed, your import is finished and your content is ready.

Things To Do After Importing Course Content

Remember, importing content is the first step in setting up your upcoming course - not the last. You should review all course materials for accuracy. In particular, availability and due dates must be reviewed and updated as needed. Third-party tools may also require additional configuration, such as:

Drexel Libraries Course Reserves

  • You will need to re-add course materials on reserve with the library for Drexel Libraries Course Reserves
  • When you click on your Course Reserves link, you will need to select the term for the new course
  • Click on Add Reserve Items where you can add new materials or import from a previous course
  • You can find more information on the Course Reserves process on the Library's website (https://libguides.library.drexel.edu/coursereserves/createandadd)

LockDown Browser

  • You will need to visit the LockDown Browser Dashboard (by clicking "LockDown Browser in the left-hand navigation menu) to reconfigure LockDown Browser settings for imported tests

VoiceThread

  • VoiceThread links will be copied but their settings will not
  • You must click on each of your VoiceThread links and set them up again
