About the Student Conference on Global Challenges
The Office of International Programs is pleased to announce the 11th Annual Student Conference on Global Challenges. Focusing this year on Climate & the Environment, the conference will take place on Thursday, March 1, 2018, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. in Behrakis Grand Hall, 3210 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104.
Some of the biggest global challenges that we face today have to do with providing people with clean, safe, efficient, and affordable energy and countering the negative effects of climate change. With increasing global interdependence we need to tackle these challenges both locally and globally and from a variety of different perspectives – scientific, economic, political, social, and cultural.
With this is mind, Drexel University's Office of International Program's 11th Annual Student Conference on Global Challenges will have the theme of Climate and the Environment. This conference offers undergraduate and graduate students opportunities to share their research and engage in critical reflection and dialogue on how climate change and the environment is shaping our global context within the diverse disciplines of health, education, science, human rights, medicine, law, media, economics, politics, development and history.
The student conference is free, open to the public, and will include breakfast, lunch, and a networking reception. If you have any questions about applying to present or attending the event, please contact the Office of International Programs at oip@drexel.edu.
Student Presentations
The Student Conference includes six student panels, where students can share original research or class projects that relate to the theme of Climate and the Environment. Panels are moderated by expert faculty and provide an excellent opportunity for students to present in a conference setting. There will be both undergraduate and graduate-level panels throughout the day-long conference.
Students interested in presenting at the Conference should apply (applications include an abstract) by January 31st at 5 p.m. All abstracts should explain how the proposed presentation relates to the theme of Climate and the Environment as well as include a clear global component. A committee of faculty and staff members will review applications, and applicants will be notified of final decisions by February 8th.
For the first time, in 2018, one outstanding presentation from each panel will be recognized with the Presentation Award. Recipients of the Presentation Award will receive financial support from the Office of International Programs, AJ Drexel Institute for Energy and the Environment, and the Office of Undergraduate Research to travel to present their work at a domestic conference in 2018.
The Student Conference will conclude with a reception that will include student poster presentations. Students of any level can apply to participate in the poster session, and can submit their abstracts below. Posters should relate to the theme of Climate and the Environment and have a global component.
Keynote Address
The Office of International Programs welcomes Jacqueline Patterson, director of the NAACP Environmental and Climate Justice Program, as keynote speaker. In addition to her work in environmental and climate justice, Jacqueline works on women's rights, violence against women, HIV and AIDS, racial justice, and economic justice. Jacqueline will deliver her address, "Climate Justice and Human Rights: Advancing Systems Change from Local to Global," at 12:45 p.m.

How can you be involved?
Present! This is an excellent opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to gain experience presenting on an academic panel. The conference allows students to showcase their research or project relating to the theme “Climate & the Environment” to students, faculty, and community members. If you are considering presenting at the conference, submit an abstract using the form above
Bring your class! The conference offers a valuable look at the research and projects of Drexel students. Faculty are encouraged to incorporate the conference into their class to open discussions relating to “Climate & the Environment” and to expose students to the research conducted by their peers. The conference can serve as an extra credit opportunity or a class field trip, if the class is within the timeframe of the conference.
Attend! The conference is an opportunity to think critically about one of the world’s most demanding themes. Attendees can learn about how changes in climate are currently impacting the environment, how students are involved in researching these changes, and how we can change our behaviors to adapt to these changes. Additionally, the conference offers a unique networking opportunity between students, faculty, community members, and professionals, such as keynote speaker Jacqueline Patterson from the NAACP.
