Independent Study Abroad

Through Drexel-sponsored programs, students have the opportunity to study abroad all over the world at one of our 75+ partner programs. However, if you are not able to find what you are looking for through our list of Drexel-sponsored programs, we’ve created a list of trusted programs that are a good match for Drexel students. You are not limited to this list, and are welcome to find other programs.

The programs listed below are considered Independent Study Abroad programs. This means that you would be studying abroad on a program outside of the Drexel system, which will have financial and academic differences than studying abroad through a Drexel program. Independent study abroad programs are usually run by other American universities, study abroad provider companies, or international universities themselves.

Financial differences: Studying abroad through an independent program means that you will pay that program directly instead of paying Drexel for the term. You will not be billed for Drexel tuition, which means that any Drexel-specific scholarships will not apply. However, it’s possible that federal scholarships could apply if the organization running the program is based in the USA, which is the case for most of the programs listed below. These programs could be more expensive or less expensive than your Drexel tuition, it depends on the cost of the program. Independent study abroad programs are NOT recommended for Liberty scholars, as the Liberty scholarship is not applicable.

Academic differences: Courses taken on an independent program will come back to Drexel as transfer credit, not Drexel credit. This is different than the Drexel sponsored programs. It will be up to your department if they are willing to accept transfer credit from your Independent Study Abroad program. Oftentimes, departments are amenable if you don’t already have a lot of transfer credits.

Application: You will complete both an application for their program of choice, and a simple Independent Study Abroad application for Drexel. To open the Drexel application, you must meet with an advisor. To schedule an appointment, please email studyabroad@drexel.edu.

The programs listed below are recommended by the Education Abroad team. The terms recommended are based on how the programs pair with the Drexel academic calendar.
