  Drexel University’s College of Engineering has selected Drexel engineering alumna Linda M. Abriola, the dean of the School of Engineering at Tufts University, as Drexel’s 2013 Engineering Leader of the Year. Abriola, who is the first female engineer to receive the honor, joins a prestigious group of engineering luminaries. Abriola will be honored for her leadership in environmental engineering, her commitment to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and her endless contributions to engineering in an effort to improve today’s societal problems.

  Norman Joseph Woodland, a 1947 graduate, who, along with classmate Bernard Silver, created the system for instant electronic recall of product information commonly called the barcode, passed away at the age of 91 on Dec. 9, 2012.   A 10-school collaboration led by Drexel University is one of several groups worldwide who are working to advance robotics technology for disaster relief as part of a challenge laid down by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Teams from academia, industry and the private sector will attempt to design and deploy a robot capable of disaster response in radioactive or bio-contaminated areas; the robot must drive vehicles, navigate human-centered environments, use tools and manipulate equipment.

  With the help of a $10 million gift by Dana and David Dornsife, Drexel University President John A. Fry announced today the establishment of the Dana and David Dornsife Center for Neighborhood Partnerships to be located on a 1.3-acre site in the heart of West Philadelphia. Expected to open in 2014, the Dornsife Center will be located at 35th and Spring Garden Streets on a vacant site that currently includes two historical properties and a school totaling more than 29,400-square-feet of space.
