Dance Ensemble Winter Concert: Reverie

January 11, 2016

The dreamlike state of deep concentration that many artists enter during the creative process is the inspiration for the Drexel Dance Ensemble’s winter concert, Reverie, taking place on January 28, 29 and 30 at 8:00pm in the Mandell Theater (33rd & Chestnut Streets). A mix of student choreography and professional work, each piece addresses reverie uniquely—whether through actual dreams or material developed in a meditative state—to explore the feeling of leaving reality and delving into one’s own consciousness.

Reverie will include pieces by Professor Olive Prince, recently featured on the WHYY segment “Articulate,” Professor Lindsay Browning, and Ellen Forman Award Winner Shaness Kemp, whose piece explores “the varied emotions one may experience in the midst of making a difficult, life changing decision.”

Granted each year, the Ellen Forman Memorial Fund Award of the Philadelphia Foundation was established as a memorial to Ellen Forman, who was a dancer, choreographer and educator for over twenty years in the Philadelphia area. Kemp, a native of Nassau, Bahamas, holds both BFA and MFA degrees from Temple University and is a certified Umfundalai (Contemporary African) teacher. She is currently a member of both Kariamu and Company: Traditions and Eleone Dance Theatre, in addition to serving as the Cultural Infusion Coordinator of Khepera Charter School.

The Drexel Ensemble blends the classical and contemporary and presents professional caliber work, with student dancers and choreographers majoring not only in Dance, but in disciplines across the University.
