Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! All this week, we are celebrating our students, alumni, and others who are making an impact throughout the world.
Chanel Johnson’s graduation from the School of Education was just the beginning for her. Only a year later, she has found success as a Licensed Behavior Specialist in her own provider agency, No One Left Behind, specializing in adults with intellectual disabilities. She attributes some of her post-grad thriving to Dr. James Connell, who’s mentorship played a big role in her graduate experience. When asked about her education, she fondly recalled her experience, which helped shape her current practice.
How has/did your experience at Drexel University School of Education help you grow professionally?
My experience at Drexel University School of Education was instrumental in my professional growth. The program provided me with a solid foundation in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), which I have applied to in my own provider agency, No One Left Behind, to support adults with intellectual disabilities. The tools and techniques I learned at Drexel have been essential in helping individuals with multiple disabilities cope and thrive daily across all settings.
Can you share a specific moment or achievement that highlights your time at Drexel?
One specific moment that stands out during my time at Drexel was when I successfully implemented an evidence-based intervention called Cover, Copy, Compare for a first grader who struggled both academically and behaviorally. I learned this intervention in the School Psychology/ABA program at Drexel. The student had to complete 40 basic single-digit addition math problems in two minutes. Initially, their baseline was 8 problems correct within the timeframe. After the intervention, which included weekly testing, the student achieved 33, 27, 35, and 36 correct problems each week. This achievement was a proud moment, as it demonstrated the practical application of my education and its positive impact on students’ lives.
How has/did the program prepare you for your current role or career advancement?
The program at Drexel prepared me for my current role and/or advanced my career by first enabling me to obtain my Behavior Specialist License. This was a significant step in my career advancement, as it allowed me to develop and implement effective treatment plans for students aged 4 to 16 using the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) learned at Drexel. These interventions have significantly improved classroom behavior, enhanced social skills, and increased academic performance. I have reduced disruptive behaviors, fostered better communication among students, and developed effective study habits, all of which have contributed to a more positive and collaborative environment. Furthermore, I am currently partnering with another Drexel alumna, Sarah Ibrahim, to establish THIVE Foundation, a nonprofit Intensive Behavior Health Support (IBHS) agency to provide ABA therapy to children.
What aspects of Drexel’s approach to education do you find most impactful?
Drexel’s emphasis on practical, real-world applications of educational theories was the most impactful aspect for me. The program’s integration of realistic case studies allowed me to apply ABA principles effectively in my professional practice. This approach not only enhanced my skills but also built my confidence in addressing the diverse needs of individuals with intellectual disabilities.
How have/did the faculty and resources at Drexel influence your educational journey?
The faculty and resources at Drexel had a significant influence on my educational journey. Dr. Connell, in particular, was a tremendous blessing and resource. He went above and beyond to ensure that I am prepared to take the BCBA examination this coming year by providing me with meaningful supervision. His dedication, deep knowledge, and genuine interest in my success made a profound impact on my learning experience. He consistently offered personalized guidance, valuable insights, and constructive feedback, which greatly enhanced my understanding of ABA principles. Dr. Connell's solid support and mentorship were instrumental in shaping my professional path. This collaboration demonstrates the lasting professional networks fostered by Drexel and underlines the program's impact on my career.
