Debora Carrera, EdD, Chief Education Officer for the City of Philadelphia

June 3, 2024

Drexel University’s School of Education is proud to announce that Debora Carrera, EdD, Chief Education Officer for the City of Philadelphia will address the Class of 2024 at the school’s commencement ceremony on June 13th. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Dr. Carrera has always harbored a passion for education. She served the School District of Philadelphia for over 27 years, rising through the ranks from teacher, to principal, to assistant superintendent. From the start of her career, Dr. Carrera has taken great pride in advocating and supporting children and their families. She began her teaching career at the same elementary school she attended as a little girl where she was able to teach kids from the same neighborhood that she grew up in. Today, Dr. Carrera is the City’s new Chief Education Officer where she works under Mayor Cherelle Parker to help implement her vision and agenda. With the help of Dr. Carrera, the School District of Philadelphia has year-round education opportunities for children, meaningful out-of-school programs, and is preparing a strategy for modernizing school buildings. The School of Education could not be happier to have such an accomplished, driven, and aspirational individual as our keynote speaker this year.

The School of Education’s commencement ceremony will take place on Thursday, June 13th at 5:00 pm at the Academy of Music in Center City Philadelphia. For more information about commencement including information about school and college ceremonies, please visit drexel.edu/commencement.
