With finals week behind them, students across the university are focused on the “most wonderful time of the year.” We’re talking, of course, about Winter Break. However, the long-anticipated time off from classes and stress over final grades often linger into winter break and students are left with questions like, “did I pass my final?” and “could I have done something differently?” While these are valid thoughts and questions, it is important for students to have some time to unwind and stress less about school. With these quick and easy tips, students can learn how to relax and enjoy their break to the fullest.
- Rest and Recharge: With all the studying for final exams, winter break is the perfect time to prioritize rest. Students should catch up on sleep, getting at least 7-8 hours. Taking days to lounge around the house and relax is essential for both physical and mental health. Everyone has a different idea of relaxation so whether that is trying a new self-care routine or sleeping all day, doing what is best for you is most important.
- Catch up with friends/family: Because Thanksgiving break is so short, some students do not have the chance to go home. Winter break is the time to really reconnect with your friends and family. As a college student, it seems like the time passes faster than usual so taking every advantage, when possible, to spend time with loved ones is important. Baking with your family or hosting a game night with your friends are both good ways to reconnect and bond with your loved ones.
- Volunteer in your community: As we are in the season of giving and the holidays are supposed to be “filled with cheer,” volunteering in your community can be a great investment of your time, a way to give back, and a chance to brighten someone else’s day. Whether you volunteer at a homeless shelter, a church, or anywhere in your local neighborhood, your kindness and compassion can make a meaningful impact.
- Do the things you enjoy: While it is important to get rest and relaxation, enjoying your favorite activities or exploring a new hobby can be a rewarding and fun experience. Watching a new show, reading a new book series, and cooking/baking are all fun and interesting things that will keep you occupied and allow you to switch things up.
- Reflect: While it is important to take time away from school and focus your thoughts elsewhere for a while, it is important to reflect on the past term, figure out areas where you can do better for the winter term, and reflect on things you did well. Noting these can facilitate a smooth transition into the winter term and encourage you to be proactive about your education.
As students approach winter break, they should use it as a time of recuperation and trying new things. With these helpful tips, students can enjoy their break but remain productive.
