Professor Clare Coleman Gives Invited Lecture on 'Torture Memos' at Northwestern Law

July 25, 2011

Professor Clare Coleman discussed "The Torture Memos: 'Making Judgments Under Conditions of Uncertainty,'" as a guest lecturer at Northwestern University School of Law on July 21.

The talk was based on Coleman’s examination of the Bush-era "torture memos" – the legal memoranda permitting the CIA to use waterboarding and other interrogation techniques on prisoners.

Coleman has developed a novel approach to introducing law students to moral judgment making, based on the writings of philosopher Susan Neiman.

Her article, "Teaching the Torture Memos: 'Making Decisions Under Conditions of Uncertainty,'" will appear next year in the Journal of Legal Education
