When Amy Dharia came to Drexel, she wanted to be a physical therapist. After learning that she wasn’t as interested in the clinical nature of the job as she first thought, she needed a new plan.
Then she took a health care law class and discovered that her place in health care was in administration. She wanted to continue studying law to prepare for her career in health care administration, but Amy was in her third year at Drexel and unsure if she could fit both into her schedule.
“I was very stressed and overwhelmed… I originally had [Law] as a minor but I saw they added it as a major and I really wanted to do it.”
When she spoke to the Kline Undergraduate Law faculty and advisor though, everything changed.
“All they wanted to do was help. I felt very comfortable fitting it in with the time I had left.”
Once she was in the program, she soon noticed that her professors genuinely wanted to teach what the students were interested in.
Since Amy is a double major, she focused her papers and projects on health care law while other students did the same with other subjects, like engineering, to apply their second field. For example, in her health care law class she learned the basics of law and read case studies related to hospitals and the medical field.
Amy then leveraged her classroom experience by earning a co-op with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. While there she combined her interests in healthcare and law by working with their team to format licensing and other essential tasks.
Soon, she’ll be one of the very first graduates to earn the BA in Law from the Kline School of Law.
“[The law program] can be beneficial for anyone…. You can apply your interests to it. It’s not just learning facts and terminology. It’s being able to learn your interests and applying it to other things.”
