How does a student go from a design and merchandising major to a Law major?

With help from the Kline BA in Law faculty.

When Courtni Daniel came to Drexel, she wanted to study the business side of fashion. Early in her first year her interests grew towards business in general, and she had also become interested in law.

Instead of being forced to choose only one though, the undergraduate Law major allowed her to make her own way.

“[The BA in Law] is designed to assist students with figuring out their path by putting their needs first…. It’s more inclusive towards the student’s needs.”

In fact, Courtni became one of the first people to declare the Law major in the Kline School of Law. She saw the benefits of her choice soon after in her Law & Society class.

“We got to make the rules of the class. We got to make the syllabus.”

With the tools to decide what direction her education would take, Courtni saw how what she was learning in the classroom connected to what was happening outside of it. In some cases, she was also able to pursue her interests more so as a law student than she was before. For example, in her intellectual property class she wrote a report on fashion law that she wouldn’t have been able to explore in any other class.

“I appreciate how the classes connect with society and the real world. It’s tailored in a way to guide students through life and the legal field.”

Courtni is now practicing what she’s learned: she suggested the idea for and is serving as the student lead on an event with Kline faculty that explores different career opportunities in law, including ones other than those that require a Juris Doctor degree.

“I’m always surrounded by people who challenge me and are constantly working towards their future. Being in this environment inspires you and motivates you to work hard.”
