U.S. Bans Most Common Form of Asbestos, After Decades of Pushback From Industry

March 18, 2024

Arthur Frank, MD, PhD, professor in the Environmental and Occupational Health department at the Dornsife School of Public Health, was quoted in The Washington Post, NPR, CBS News, Popular Science, verywell health, BBC, and morethroughout March about the EPA’s ban on the import and use of chrysotile asbestos. The ban comes 33 years after a federal judge blocked the agency’s initial attempt to ban the cancer-causing mineral.

Dr. Frank told NPR that asbestos can still be found in many existing buildings and products. "This is not a total ban by any means," Frank said. "It is a modest step that reduces future exposures."
