Math Colloquium: Approximation Schemes for the Optimal Poincare Inequality

Abstract: We present discrete and continuous time flows that can be used to approximate optimal constants and functions for which equality holds in Poincaré's inequality. If time permits, we show how these methods extend to other familiar Sobolev inequalities.
