Course Description

The GIP Medical Technology Innovation (MedTech) Workshops aim to expose early stage startups, medical technology development and transfer professionals and academics/ researchers engaged in translational research to “on-the-ground” realities of medical technology innovation from concept to commercialization in a global context.

The focus of this workshop is on biologics, in particular, frontiers of cell and gene therapies, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine and immunological sciences and technologies such as antibody development. Topics covered range from the critical importance of the existing medtech innovation ecosystem to legal considerations in intellectual property, incorporation, commercialization, clinical research and regulatory strategies for approval, biomanufacturing and supply chains and fundraising opportunities to sponsor the initiative.

Workshop participants are encouraged to reach out and to leverage resources in the local as well as the international ‘innovation ecosystem’. A workshop expectation is to enhance and expand the participants ’professional network of strategic partners, facilitators and stakeholders likely to enable them to achieve their medtech innovation goals globally. The MedTech Workshops starts with orientation sessions on the first week followed by five weeks of classes and concludes with optional professional mentoring sessions tailored to specific needs of the startup.

Workshop class times are enriched by overlapping, in part, with the Medical Technology Innovation II – Biologics (MedTech II) course panels offered remotely (via Zoom) to students from Drexel University and partner universities in Turkey. Participants from startups have the opportunity to meet and interact with MedTech II students who are prepared to assist startups reach a milestone or advance a new company strategy. This arrangement provides startups access to local medtech innovation talent pool for potential sourcing needs both in U.S. and in Turkey. The course faculty and advisors are also accessible for guidance and consultation.
