Black Play-by-Play Scholarship Opportunity
October 24, 2022
Of the 200+ television and radio play-by-play jobs in Major League Baseball and Minor League Baseball, fewer than five are currently filled by Black broadcasters. This number is no different when looking at play-by-play roles across all sports and all levels within the sports landscape. A lack of diversity exists across the play-by-play profession, and The Black Play-by-Play Broadcaster Grant & Scholarship Fund addresses many barriers-to-entry that exist for aspiring Black broadcasters. This fund will lift those who otherwise wouldn't be able to get a start in the field, while pushing the industry to more closely reflect the country as a whole.
The BlackPxPFund is a 501(c)3 nonprofit in its third year which is looking to help diversify an overwhelmingly white industry. We are awarding $7,500 in scholarship money this academic year and will be growing that number in a major way in 2023-2024 thanks to investments from the NFL, MLB, NHL and others who support our initiative. Beyond the money, we have professional broadcasters across the country who have volunteered as mentors and have been working with former applicants over the past two years on professional placement and advice on how to navigate the competitive job market.
