  • Juneteenth

    Join Us in Celebrating Juneteenth

    June 17, 2022

On Monday, June 20th, Drexel University will observe Juneteenth (officially June 19th). Each year, Juneteenth commemorates the effective end of slavery in the United States. Although President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, it wasn't until June 19, 1865 that those enslaved were truly freed by executive decree.

Join us in celebrating this historic milestone for Black history on Wednesday, June 22nd 4 to 7 p.m. at the Juneteenth Block Party at Rush Alumni Garden and Lancaster Walk, hosted by the Center for Black Culture (CBC), Black Employees at Drexel (BEAD), Student Center for Diversity and Inclusion (SCDI), Center for Inclusive Education and Scholarship (CIES), LeBow BRIDGE, Office of Equality and Diversity (OED) and Dornsife Center for Neighborhood Partnerships. RSVP here.

    Additional opportunities:

    •  The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University is offering free admission to commemorate Juneteenth on Saturday, June 18th.

    • On Sunday, the African American Museum of Philadelphia hosts their Juneteenth Block Party: Celebrating the Legacy of Emancipation, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with live performances, food and drink, yard games, a village marketplace, mural making, community resources and free admission to the museum all day courtesy of Wawa.

    • Be sure to check out the Philadelphia Juneteenth Parade and Festival, the largest annual celebration of Juneteenth in the nation.

    • Last year, the Office of Equality and Diversity hosted a "Frank Conversation in Commemoration of Juneteenth," a recording of which you can view on the OED Media Library.

As a reminder the University will be closed on Monday, June 20th in observance of Juneteenth and summer quarter class will begin on Tuesday, June 21st.

Graduate Student Stipends and Philadelphia Wage Tax Memo

    June 10, 2022

In 2019, the City of Philadelphia issued a memo indicating that Philadelphia universities should withhold Wage Tax on 50 percent of the stipend amount it pays any graduate student who renders services to the university. For example, if a graduate student receives an annual stipend of $15,000, the university should withhold and remit Wage Tax on $7,500.

Effective May 2022, graduate students will see this reduction in applicable wage tax directly in their pay checks. The Philadelphia Wage Tax will only be applied to 50 percent of the stipend for the pay. Additionally, corrections will be made for all prior applicable wages in 2022. The result of the correction will be an increase in net pay.

In order to receive any applicable refunds for 2019-2021, students must follow a petition process outline on the Human Resources website.

We encourage all graduate students who received a stipend from Drexel between 2019-2021 to review the website and complete the process to file a petition for refunds for 2019-2021. Communications will be going to all affected parties with more information, including alumni.

In addition to our annual course offerings on RCR and ORI led RCR workshops, here are some reminders of additional resources and trainings that will help promote and maintain scholarly integrity that our institution requires.

Participate in Drexel's Areas of Excellence and Opportunity Survey

    June 07, 2022

In March, the Provost's Office kicked off an initiative, in coordination with the Strategic Plan implementation, to define Drexel's Areas of Excellence and Opportunity (AEO).

Drexel's 2030 Strategic Plan calls for us to "address society's most pressing challenges by focusing on the critical intersections of Health, Technology/Engineering, Design and Social Sciences, and their impact on our most vulnerable communities."

The Provost's Office Areas of Excellence and Opportunity initiative is digging deeper into these broad areas of Health, Technology/Engineering, Design and Social Sciences to uncover specific areas of academic and research strength, as well as areas of potential opportunity, to grow our reputation in our academic and research programs and make positive contributions to societal challenges.

The intention of this survey is to gather a wide set of perspectives across our community to develop a sharper picture of how Drexel is viewed today and where Drexel will need to engage in the future. This survey is meant to focus on topic areas to guide future academic development. Findings will be shared with the community and used to guide future conversations across Drexel.

All Drexel students are invited to complete this survey.

The survey will close on Wednesday, June 15.
