Class descriptions

Advanced Pilates Apparatus Circuit

Calling all DPTD grads and seasoned Pilates practitioners! This 50-minute small group equipment class will take clients through advanced Pilates repertoire using the Wunda chair, Reformer, and Tower. At least one year of Pilates apparatus experience is highly recommended.

Apparatus Express

Apparatus Express is a condensed version of our mixed equipment class. Clients will use the tower, barrel, reformer, and chair to stretch, tone, and take a deep breath before continuing the work day.

Apprentice Mat

Free Class! A Pilates inspired mat class taught by one of the Apprentices of the Drexel Pilates Teacher Training Program. This is an all levels class. Feel welcome to provide any feedback you have to our teachers in training!

The Chair

The Wunda Chair is one of the more challenging pieces of Pilates Apparatus. Exercises on this piece of equipment require focus and control as you work with a spring-loaded pedal and your own body weight. Clients should expect a rigorous and satisfying class using the chair and other props and tolls to support their practice.

Conscious Circuit

As a Mixed Equipment Class, offers instruction in modes of perception and focus. We use Pilates concepts and Drexel Pilates values to shine light on skill building and moving towards advanced material, by looking at “what gets in my way”. The goal of conscious movement is approached from both a physical and a mental/emotional standpoint. Clients can expect to experience a felt knowledge of how their body works, and move towards a greater awareness of their own structure and practice.

Director's Mat

Join Drexel Pilates Program Director, Jennifer Morley (Jmo) to stretch, strengthen, and lengthen your muscles through a thoughtful Pilates mat class. Expect to perform both classical and contemporary Pilates exercises under the guidance of a master. Her passion for embodiment inspires us all!

Mixed Equipment

Each class Utilizes one, or a combination of the Pilates Reformer, Tower, Wunda Chair, and Barrel. Each instructor will create a unique class that sets you up for success in supporting healthy function and improving tone. All levels welcome!

Pilates Apparatus

Each class utilizes one, or a combination of, the Pilates Reformer, Tower, Wunda Chair, and Barrel. Each instructor will create a unique class that sets you up for success in supporting healthy function and improving tone. All levels welcome!

Pilates + Foam Roller

Start the weekend off with feeling rejuvenated by decreasing muscle tension, and learning Pilates inspired exercise variations using the foam roller. We recommend using a 36" foam roller when participating in this virtual class.

Pilates X

Pilates X is a boot-camp style circuit utilizing the classical Pilates equipment. The “X” stands for extra emphasis on strength and flow, two of the six Pilates key principles. Using the various weighted springs while increasing reps and tempo, you’ll heat up, tone up, and stretch out all while having a blast.

Reformer Essentials

The Pilates Reformer uses springs, leverage, and body-weight to target specific muscle groups while providing support in achieving proper alignment. Reformer essentials will flow through classic and contemporary Pilates exercises with a focus on form and functional movement.

Tower Hour

The Pilates Tower uses the support of the mat and the challenge of the springs to tone muscle, find symmetry in the body, and access a deeper connection to the core muscles.

Checks and cash are excepted in studio. Credit cards may be used at the front desk of the Rec Center. For class rates, visit our pricing page. Contact us at pilates@drexel.edu.

FAQs

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a movement modality and exercise method designed to strengthen, lengthen, and balance the body. With systematic practice of specific exercises coupled with focused breathing patterns, Pilates is both a fitness endeavor and a personal centering practice. The system is an important supplement to dance and sport as it both prevents and rehabilitates injury!

Who is Joseph Pilates?

Joseph Pilates is the creator of the work he called “Contrology.” While working in a German internment camp hospital in WWI, he developed both the prototypes for modern day Pilates equipment and the classical movement repertoire. After his passing, Joe Pilates’ “Contrology” was turned over to a handful of his students (now known as the “Elders”) who have since developed and promoted the exercise method.

How do I get started?

What should I wear to my class or session?

Wear comfortable clothes that let you move and stretch fully. Form-fitting workout wear is suggested so the instructor can see your muscles engaging and help you with correct form. Pilates is performed either in socks or barefoot, so there is no need for shoes!

What can I expect from my instructor?

Drexel Pilates instructors are supportive, focused, and passionate about helping their clients. Every Instructor has completed the full 450 hour Drexel Pilates Training Program.

How often should I do Pilates?

Ideally we suggest doing Pilates 2 to 3 times a week. However, any amount of time spent in the studio will be beneficial.

When do I need clearance from a doctor to do Pilates?

Although Pilates is a very safe, non-impact movement modality, it is important to get clearance from your doctor if you have been under a doctor’s care for an injury or recent surgery. Pilates is excellent for someone who has finished physical therapy and has been cleared by their physician to go on with more movement conditioning. The repertoire was developed to produce rehabilitative and body transforming results.

How do I pay for services?

Either bring cash or check to the Pilates studio with you OR pay with credit card at the Drexel Recreation Center front desk.

Where is Drexel Pilates located?

The Drexel Pilates Studio is located in the Drexel Recreation Center. You can enter the recreation at the corner of 33rd and Market Street. The employees at the front desk will be able to direct you from there.
