The School of Education has two grants with the School District of Philadelphia to support the development of certified teachers committed to teaching in SDP. In both Philadelphia Teacher Residency programs, PTR ($$$) and PTR-K6 ($$$), modeled after a medical residency, our candidates spend a full year in a classroom with a certified teacher who serves as a year-long mentor. The resident takes on increasing responsibility for classroom teaching as the year progresses. At the same time, they are enrolled in a teacher education program that provides course work and professional development. The combination of the classroom and course work prepares the residents to be certified by the end of the year-long program. The PTR program provides a certification pathway for candidates interested in being certified in Grades 4-8 or 7 -12 STEM content areas or 4-8 English Language Arts, all areas in which the district has seen the need for teachers and participants commit to teaching in the district for at least 3 years. The PTR-K6 program is a pathway to certification in grades Pre-K – 6 for paraprofessionals in the School District of Philadelphia and participants in this program commit to teaching in the district for at least 2 years
