Developing and Validating the Qualitative Characteristics of Children’s Play Assessment System

Supported by Caplan Foundation

Project led by:

PI: Michael Haslip, PhD

This one-year project in the McNichol ECE lab is validating an assessment created to measure young children’s play skill development, called the Qualitative Characteristics of Children’s Play or QCCP, and building a new online platform for teachers to complete the assessment, generate a score report, and create individual action plans based on student assessment data - to improve children’s play engagement and support their holistic development. Upon completion of the project, the assessment platform, and its associated teacher training program, will be accessible at www.qccp.org.  By disaggregating play into incremental steps that can be observed and assessed, children’s play skills can be systematically supported. The QCCP platform will include a forum and educator resources to assist teachers to achieve individualized goals for children who are presenting patterns of atypical play development.
