This panel consisting of Dr. Vivian Lee (Director of Counseling Advocacy at the National Office for School Counselor Advocacy); Dr. Liza Herzog (Director of Research at the Philadelphia Education Fund); and Penny Nixon (Chief Academic Officer of the School District of Philadelphia) provided an overview of PA state data, Philadelphia School District initiatives, and perspectives on how higher education partnerships can enhance Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education for K-12 students.

Title: Igniting STEM Learning: Inspired Efforts of Teachers

This panel consisting of Gamal Sherif (Biochemistry teacher at Science Leadership Academy), Derrrick Houck (Math teacher at Olney Charter School), Kimberly Ellerbee (Principal at Samuel Powel Elementary School), Sylvia Simms (Founder of Parent Power), and Connie Goochee (Science teacher at Woodrow Wilson Middle School) , moderated by Jerry Jordan (President of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers) discussed the importance of cultivating life-long STEM learners, the critical role of the community in supporting STEM teaching and learning, and placing STEM education at the forefront of educational initiatives.

Title: Learning Through the Arts
April 30, 2013—
This panel consisting of Megan Giampietro (Vice Principal of Philadelphia Charter School for Arts and Sciences at H.R. Edmunds); Dr. Miriam Giguere (Director of Dance at Drexel’s Westphal College of Media Arts and Design); Dr. Youngmoo Kim (Assistant Dean of Engineering for Media Technologies at Drexel’s College of Engineering), and Donald T. Lunsford (Artistic Director of D2), moderated by Steve Wills (Coordinator of Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Education Resource Center), discussed the significance of the arts to education. Special performances were also presented by D3, the youth dance ensemble of PHILADANCO, and Jamarr Hall, a youth poet of the Philadelphia Youth Poetry Movement.
