Academic Advisor Spotlight: Kelly Young

Academic advisors are some of the most important people in students' educational lives. Not only do they provide constant support, but they guide them on the right path to make sure credit requirements are met, and students' career and educational needs are attended to. Learn more about Kelly Young, an advisor for EdD Educational Leadership and Management and masters in the Educational Administration program as she shares some insight on her role and working at Drexel.

Q: Can you describe your role as an academic advisor and what a typical day looks like for you?

A: As an academic advisor, my role involves guiding students through their educational journey, helping them make informed decisions about their academic and career goals. Throughout the day, my goal is to support students in achieving their academic and career aspirations, providing them with the tools and resources they need to succeed. It is a rewarding role that involves a mix of one-on-one interactions, administrative work, and continuous learning.

Q: Tell us about the programs you advise here and how long you have been with Drexel.

A:
I advise for the EdD Educational Leadership and Management and masters in Educational Administration program. I have been with Drexel for 3 years.

Q: How do you tailor your advising approach to meet the unique needs of Drexel students?

A: Tailoring my advising approach to meet the unique needs of Drexel students involves several key strategies such as understanding the individual goals of each student. I utilize flexibility and accessibility to our working adult students who have families, and careers and are time-managing school. I am mindful of the diverse backgrounds and experiences of Drexel students. I strive to create an inclusive environment where all students feel valued and understood.

Q: What are some things you enjoy doing outside of work?

A: Outside of work I enjoy being with my family and traveling to my 3 kids’ athletic events. If I am not at home, I am either in a hockey rink, or at a soccer or lacrosse field.

Q: Do you have any fun facts to share about yourself?


A: A fun fact about me is that I was born in Saudi Arabia. I also love to travel and my most recent far-away adventure was in Australia.
