Drexel University’s School of Education to offer accelerated ESL Certificate for teachers
March 31, 2023
Drexel University’s School of Education will offer a new, accelerated English as a Second Language (ESL) endorsement program for certified teachers to be completed this summer. The 13.5 credit online program is broken up into two summer sessions. The first session runs from June 26th – August 1st. The second summer session begins on August 2nd and ends on September 9th. Students take two classes each session and must complete both sessions to satisfy the requirements for ESL Program Specialist (K-12) endorsement as required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
The accelerated program is designed to give current teachers the convenience of adding ESL certification to their skills in just one summer. A typical ESL certification program usually takes up to a year to complete.
The four courses include “Language Learning & Teaching,” “Structure and Sound System of English,” “Design and Assessment,” and “The Intercultural Learner.” During the final course, “The Intercultural Learner,” students complete a field experience. The School of Education’s Field Placement Office coordinates field experience locations for students at a location as convenient for the student as possible. All courses are completed online to allow students flexibility to complete coursework at times that are best for them.
Spots in the summer ESL program will fill up fast. Students have until Monday, May 29th to apply. The School of Education will host two online information sessions on April 12th and April 25th at 6:30 pm ET where students will have a chance to meet with faculty and the academic advising team to learn more about what to expect and get answers to any questions they may have about the program.
