Philly Youth Futures: Practices, Policies, & Pathways

Urban Strategy in the Present Tense is a conversation series featuring notable urbanists discussing their frontline work in urban resilience, as well as sharing their insights about public policymaking, urban problem solving, and life in Philadelphia.

This installment of our conversation series focused on the future of Philadelphia youth, how to empower our children, and create strategies for positive change. We were joined by Nia Eubanks-Dixon and Cass Green; read more about them below.

The series is produced by the Lindy Institute for Urban Innovation at Drexel University in partnership with the Urban Strategy Masters Program in Drexel's Westphal College of Media, Arts & Design.

Nia Eubanks-Dixon (she/her) is the founder and creator of Creative Praxis (CP). The art-infused, healing-informed, and anti-racist trainings of Creative Praxis emerged from over 20 years of research and experience working with diverse communities worldwide. Nia is dedicated to the craft of interactive, transformational facilitation by providing young people, educators, and community members with intentional time for healing, learning, growth, and action.

Nia is an international seasoned trainer/facilitator, counselor, professional dancer/storyteller, teacher, and therapeutic restorative community artist. She is certified in life coaching, crisis intervention, the dialogic process, restorative practices, interactive mediation, restorative arts, trauma healing, trauma-informed spaces, and de-escalation techniques.

In 2002 Nia received her BFA in Dance Education from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. In 2017 she received her Master’s Degree in Urban Studies with a concentration in Community Arts from Eastern University. She has worked as a director for a member of out-of school-time programs, a teaching artist, a middle school teacher, a General Education Development (GED) program director, a life coach, a youth community organizer, a care practitioner, an international youth program director, a touring artist for a number renowned dance companies and practicing community healer.

Each year Nia trains thousands of people globally. She has worked with national and international organizations, including but not limited to: American Friends Service Committee, Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, The Harmony Project, The Aspen Institute, Jobs for the Future, and Urban Bush Women. Her liberation-centered pedagogy has been incorporated into classrooms, community centers, and nonprofit organizations throughout the Philadelphia region and beyond with 99% of participants walking away with new knowledge. Nia’s learning and development approach is arts-based, innovative, energizing, and creative. Participants have noted positive experiences that include “rapid vulnerability,” and “vibrant perspectives and actions to heavy topics.”


Cassandra Green (Cass) is a community activist/organizer, engagement specialist, cultural producer and social art practitioner with extensive experience in non-profit business administration, project management, arts education, fundraising, creative place-keeping, asset based capacity building and succession planning.

She joined the staff of the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office in 2022 working with the DATA Lab, Juvenile Diversion, Finance, Grant Administration and on special projects. Prior to the PDAO Cass has served as Project Manager for the We CAN Collaborative (New Kensington Community Development Corporation, HACE and Impact Service DOJ-Innovations In Community Based Crime Community Reduction Grant (CBCR) in the Kensington and Fairhill Neighborhood of Philadelphia. She previously served as PEC’s as Dir. of Community Engagement & Partnerships managing its quality of life programming, Community Connectors, Drexel’s Action for Early Learning Outreach and Engagement, organized the Lancaster Ave Jazz & Arts Festival and creative-place-making initiatives.

Cass’s career includes 27 years at the University of Pennsylvania serving as the senior business and building administrator for the Institute of Contemporary Art-ICA for 17 years. She is a multi-discipline artist, curator, and producer of the “Mill Creek Past, Present and Future” documentary, co-founded the Mill Creek Community Partnership –MCCP (2004) and established the Fine Arts Through Our Eyes Community Arts Initiative in 2005, serves as its Director. FATOE's mission is to provide a safe, creative, stimulating and accessible environment for individuals to explore contemporary art - with a concentration towards artists of color.

She currently serves on various boards and has been the recipient of numerous awards. She is committed to serving as a catalyst for change and advocate for accessibility to opportunities and resources for underserved populations and youth. She ran as a Democratic candidate for the new 10th District in the May 2022 primary, coming in less than 200 votes of the win and is currently running for the 10th HD State Representative seat in West Philly and Logan Square in the April 2024 primary.
