Drexel Global Alcohol and Drug Policy for Global Programs
Following Drexel University policy, alcohol is prohibited on university business (including Intensive Courses Abroad, Non-Credit Experiences Abroad, all other global program types). Program funds/other university funds may not be used to purchase alcohol unless academically necessary as pre-approved by the sponsoring College or School and Drexel Global. If pre-approved as necessary for academic purposes, alcohol must be limited to one drink per person. Anyone who consumes alcohol must be of legal drinking age in the country or jurisdiction where the alcohol is consumed. Faculty Leaders, Staff Leaders and Chaperones must not consume alcohol on any official program activity, and should avoid consuming alcohol in a social setting with students.
Pre-Approval for Academic Necessity: After securing approval from department leadership (Dean, VP, etc.) exceptions for academically necessary alcohol consumption must be made, by petition, to the Senior Director, Global Safety and Operations.
Alcohol abuse or illegal drug use will not be tolerated on any Drexel University program. Violation of this policy may result in the immediate dismissal from the program. The possession or use of illegal drugs or substances is always prohibited on all Drexel University programs and activities.
Alcohol and drug laws vary by country and can carry severe penalties. Faculty leaders, Staff Leaders, and Chaperones must apprise their students of laws and expectations prior to travel and again during the in-country orientation upon arrival. Students are expected to participate in the daily activities of the educational program. Under no circumstances should a student’s consumption of alcohol or use of drugs interfere with the program activities.
Responsible consumption of alcohol for faculty, staff, chaperones, and students includes, but is not limited to:
- Abiding by host country laws;
- Only using program funds to purchase alcohol during pre-approved, academically necessary activities;
- No overconsuming alcohol;
- Never interfering with the educational experience;
- Avoiding inappropriate behavior towards others;
- Limiting consumption, when approved, to one drink per person (or a reasonable equivalent);
- Never consuming alcohol when actively leading a program and/or supervising students, regardless of exception status;
- Ensuring that there is always at least one alcohol free Drexel faculty/staff member on site at all times;
- Avoiding inappropriate behavior such as destruction of property or harm to environment.
