1098-T (Tuition Statement)

What Is a 1098-T?

Drexel University is required by the IRS to provide Form 1098-T (Tuition Statement) to students who were enrolled during academic terms in the calendar year. Your 1098-T shows:

  • Whether you were enrolled at least half-time.
  • Whether you were a graduate student.
  • Payments made toward qualified tuition and fees (Box 1).
  • Scholarships or grants received during the year.

The 1098-T is used for tax purposes, but Drexel cannot tell you whether you qualify for an education tax credit or how much you may receive. For help, consult a tax advisor or IRS Publication 970: Tax Benefits for Education.

Social Security Number Updates

If you need to add or update your SSN, submit a Change in Student Identification form with required supporting documentation to Drexel Central via AskDrexel. Accepted supporting documents are listed on the form.

Important to Know

The 1098-T is based on calendar-year activity (January 1–December 31), not the academic year. Because Drexel's academic year spans two calendar years, charges and payments for one academic year may appear on two different 1098-T forms. To see your own payment history, check your records or review your account in DrexelOne.

IRS Form 8300 (Cash Payments Over $10,000)

Federal law requires Drexel University to report cash payments over $10,000 to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN).

Drexel must file IRS Form 8300 when:

  • More than $10,000 in cash is received in a single payment, or
  • More than $10,000 in cash is received across multiple related payments

Cash includes physical currency and does not include checks, credit cards, or electronic payments.

What Information Is Reported?

IRS Form 8300 includes:

  • The payer's name, address, date of birth, occupation, and SSN or ITIN.
  • The form of identification used to verify the payer (such as a driver's license or passport).
  • If the payment was made on behalf of someone else, that person's name, address, occupation, and SSN or ITIN.

What This Means for You

If Drexel is required to file Form 8300:

  • You will be notified by email.
  • You must complete your portion of the form in person at the Cashier's Window.

This reporting is required by law and does not indicate a problem with your student account.
