    Speaker: Hortensia Amaro is Dean's Professor, Social Work and Preventive Medicine and Associate Vice Provost, Community Research Initiatives at the University of Southern California. Dr. Amaro’s research has focused on alcohol and drug use and addiction among adolescents and adults; the development and testing of behavioral interventions for HIV/AIDS prevention; substance abuse and mental health treatment for Latina and African American women and incarcerated men; alcohol and drug use among college populations; and behavioral interventions for HIV medications adherence. Dr. Amaro has served on the editorial board of the American Journal of Public Health and other leading publications, and on several Institute of Medicine committees.

    Ruth Shim is vice chair of education and faculty development in the Department of Psychiatry at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. Formerly, she was an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Morehouse School of Medicine, and the associate director of Behavioral Health at the National Center for Primary Care. Her research interests include mental health stigma, integration of primary care and behavioral health care, and mental health disparities. She is co-editor of an upcoming book on the social determinants of mental health, to be published by American Psychiatric Publishing. Dr. Shim has ongoing collaborative relationships with the Carter Center Mental Health Program, the Satcher Health Leadership Institute at Morehouse School of Medicine, and the Center for Behavioral Health Policy Studies at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University. Dr. Shim is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and is a member of the Preventive Psychiatry and Fellowship Committees of the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry. She received a M.P.H. in health policy and a M.D. from Emory University.

    Dr. Shreya Kangovi grew up in India, where she observed lay people doing medical outreach work, going to homes to help the underprivileged with health care issues. Seeing these "community health workers" in India, Dr. Kangovi realized the United States could apply this same approach in needy communities. This was her inspiration for the Patient-Centered Transition (PaCT) project, in which community residents help keep underprivileged patients on course after a hospitalization. In this video Dr. Kangovi recounts the case of a patient who was able to turn his life around with the assistance of one of these "natural helpers."
