Getting Started: GIS for Public Health Professionals

The Mid-Atlantic Regional Training Center at the Drexel University Dornsife School of Public Health hosts this session which will cover how spatial data and analysis are used in public health research, strengths and limitations in working with spatial data, and resources available to learn more about GIS and public health. Lunch is provided.
 

Learning Objectives:
Discuss the strengths and limitations in working with spatial data;
Identify examples of how spatial data and analysis are used in public health research;
Learn resources that are available for learning more about GIS and public health.

Getting Started: GIS for Public Health Professionals will be taught by Steven Melly, MS. Mr. Melly is a Geographic Information System (GIS) Analyst for the Urban Health Collaborative at Dornsife School of Public Health, Drexel University. He has extensive experience using GIS to model the physical world for public health research. Working closely with epidemiologists and biostatisticians, he has used GIS to create variables from spatial datasets that can be used in statistical models of exposure to environmental hazards. He has also used GIS to create neighborhood measures of the social environment.
