Infant Mortality, Low Birth Weight, Racism, and Health Disparities
Presented by A. Carli Richie-Zavaleta, DrPH(c)

Dornsife School of Public Health
Infant preterm birth and low birth weight are linked to risk of infant mortality. According to the Philadelphia Department of Public Health (2014), Philadelphia has the highest prevalence of low birth weight births among the 11 largest US counties. Both infant mortality and low birth weight births are most prevalent among non-Hispanic blacks. It is clear that black mothers and their infants continue to experience health disparities in the 21st century. Yet, health disparity conversations and strategies to narrow disparities cannot be separated
from the issue of racism (all types). Come and join the conversation on the interconnections of infant mortality, low birth weight births, and the experience of racism.
We will think collectively on how we, as public health researchers and practitioners, can contribute to the narrowing of health disparities in our own city and beyond. A. Carli Richie-Zavaleta, a doctoral candidate in the CHP department, will moderate this second MCH Journal Club of the 2015-2016 academic-year.
The Maternal and Child Health Working Group is excited to offer students interested in Maternal and Child Health (MCH) an opportunity to interact with MCH faculty through discussions of relevant MCH publications. MCH journal club facilitators will present highlights of a chosen article and comment on its important for MCH. An open discussion of the article will follow.
All participants will be expected to read the article before the meeting to ensure meaningful discussion.
