Gun violence is a leading cause of death and a major cause of Black/White disparities in premature mortality among men. There is widespread pessimism about our ability to reduce gun violence in America, yet research indicates that the right policies, law enforcement practices, and behavioral interventions can reduce violence and save lives. Cultural divides over guns, policing practices, and race pose serious challenges, but are not insurmountable for us to forge more effective and just strategies to curb gun violence.

The Grand Rounds Lecture Series is an exciting series of talks and discussions concerning local, national and international issues in public health practice and research. Previous speakers have included the Massachusetts’ Secretary of Health & Human Services, officials from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention and the Philadelphia Health Commissioner. These lectures provide an excellent opportunity for the Philadelphia community to keep informed and share insights about public health and medicine in a collegial atmosphere. CPH credits are available.
