Aging in a Sending Society: What Migration Does to Those Who Stay

Wednesday, October 14, 2026

12:00 PM-1:00 PM

The Migration, Ethnicity, Racism and Health Group (MERHG) invites you to a hybrid seminar featuring Amilcar Matos-Moreno, PhD, MPH, who will discuss how migration shapes aging, family networks, and health among older adults who remain in communities with sustained out-migration, drawing primarily on research conducted in Puerto Rico.

About Our Speaker

Amilcar Matos-Moreno, PhD, MPH, is an Assistant Research Professor at the Center for Healthy Aging at the Pennsylvania State University and an Associate Professor at Carlos Albizu University in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His research examines how migration reshapes aging and health in the communities migrants leave behind. Puerto Rico, one of the fastest-aging societies in the Americas, is his central case. With support from a National Institute on Aging K01 career development award, he combines formal kinship demography, social network analysis, and longitudinal survey data to study kinship erosion, transnational family ties, and the health of older adults.

About MERHG

MERHG is a multidisciplinary working group at the Drexel Dornsife focused on reducing health inequities among immigrant, ethnic, and racial minorities.
