April Maternal and Child Health Speaker Series
The Philly Joy Bank (PJB) is a demonstration
guaranteed income (GI) program co-developed by community members that provides
$1,000 a month for 18 months during and after pregnancy for 250 pregnant
individuals residing in three low-income, predominantly Black neighborhoods.
As part of our community-driven mixed methods evaluation plan, we use
participatory arts-based methods in a sub-study with Philly Joy Bank
participants (n=14). Participants engaged in six weekly in-person Photovoice
sessions during pregnancy and two sessions postpartum to explore whether and
how $1000 monthly, plus optional care support services, reduces financial
stress and improves prenatal health and wellbeing. Our community-driven findings contribute
to a more comprehensive understanding of who is benefiting from the Philly Joy
Bank, as well as the impacts of GI on health and well-being among birthing
parents generally, and Black birthing parents, in particular.
