MERHG Seminar Series: Together for African Caribbean Black Youth
Wednesday, December 10, 2025
12:00 PM-1:00 PM
This event is part of the Migration, Ethnicity, Racism, and Health Group
(MERHG) Seminar series. Substance use and violence disproportionately affect
African Caribbean Black (ACB) youth in high-risk urban settings, making
culturally grounded prevention strategies essential.
This presentation
introduces an adaptation of an evidence-based school–community intervention
designed to reflect ACB adolescents’ lived experiences and cultural strengths.
Attendees will learn how an equity-centered, participatory process integrates
African and Caribbean values, caregiver perspectives, and school input to
enhance relevance and sustainability.
Dr. Bertranna A. Muruthi, assistant professor in the Department of
Community Health & Prevention, leads this work. Her research focuses on
immigrant families within community contexts, using culturally responsive
methods to address migration, resettlement, and resilience. Through an
intersectionality lens and transnational framework, she explores how immigrant
experiences evolve across borders to inform prevention programming that fosters
community transformation and social change.
