Mental Health among Migrants in Transit in Latin America

Wednesday, February 12, 2025

12:00 PM-1:00 PM

Join this Migration, Ethnicity, Race, and Health Working Group (MERHG) event on February 12.

Migrants and asylum seekers face significant threats to their mental health and psychosocial well-being while transiting to their intended destination.

This precarious phase of migration is also when access to health and social services is most limited. In this seminar, I will present data from a set of ongoing and recently completed studies in Latin America that aim to characterize the trajectories of mental health symptoms among migrants in transit as well as the factors that influence their mental health and access to health and protection services during migration.

Claire Greene is an Assistant Professor in the Program on Forced Migration and Health at the Columbia Mailman School of Public Health. Her research aims to improve the effectiveness and implementation of mental health and substance use interventions for displaced populations in humanitarian emergencies. In her work she collaborates with multilateral agencies, governments, non-governmental organizations, and civil society organizations. She is a member of the Steering Committee for the Columbia University Global Mental Health Program. She is an Editor of the Global Mental Health Journal and the Journal of Refugee Studies.
