Firearms and traumatic experiences throughout migration

Tuesday, March 5, 2024

11:00 AM-12:00 PM

Please join us for this Migration, Ethnicity, Racism, and Health Group (MERHG) Seminar!

Laura Vargas, PhD, LMSW, MPA, is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado. She is funded by the National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities and is researching exposure to trauma and mental health of recent Latinx immigrants in the United States.

This presentation will provide background information on the trafficking of firearms from the U.S. to Latin America and how those weapons shape the lives, migration decisions, and health of children and families. She will present findings on trauma exposure, migration characteristics and mental health from my research with 321 Latinx immigrant adults arriving to the U.S. southern border. This presentation will illustrate some of the ways in which this vulnerable population faces systemic inequities and how they shape the future outlook of families in both, countries of origin and in the U.S.
